Dorset Art Weeks 2018

Friday, May 11th, 2018

The Courtyard Gallery and Workshops (DAW venue 171) is the stunning, rural location of renowned furniture maker Simon Thomas Pirie. This year, Simon is thrilled to be joined by two very distinguished artists: glass-maker Ruth Dresman and abstract painter Georgina Fermer, who bring a vivid splash of colour to this vibrant exhibition.

Ruth Dresman:
This glass has been both liquid and solid, blown and carved in the process of its creation. Simple forms frame the flowing images brought to life by light and colour.

Georgina Fermer:
Georgina’s training at Hornsey College Of Art in the 60s laid the basis for a life in painting. Her inspiration comes from the visual impact of emotionally moving places or events, certain motifs (landscape, buildings, water, light) that have arisen repeatedly over years, not always from conscious choice.

We will also be using one of Plankbridge’s stunning shepherd’s huts as the design office during the event. These fabulous huts built by Richard Lee and his team in the Piddle Valley make great garden rooms, offices and studios. It will give us a bit more gallery space to show work in as well!

Needless to say there will be plenty of our own work in the gallery showcasing the beauty and versatility of natural timber. There will be classic designs alongside new pieces including tables, chairs, display cabinets and a few surprises! On weekdays the busy workshop will be open for visitors to see work in progress and to chat to the team as they create more heirlooms of the future.

Simon Thomas Pirie & Karina Gill bring London Show to Purbeck Art Weeks

Friday, May 1st, 2015

27-31 May 2015: The Courtyard Gallery & Workshop, Rogers Hill Farm, Briantspuddle. DT2 7HJ

TWO of the area’s leading designer-makers have teamed up for a prestigious London exhibition, which they are then bringing back home to Dorset for a free show during Purbeck Art Weeks.

Furniture maker Simon Thomas Pirie from Briantspuddle and silversmith Karina Gill from Hazelbury Bryan are taking part in “Inspired 2015” at The Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell, an exhibition of the finest modern furniture makers and contemporary silversmiths. The event is part of British Silver Week (19-23 May).

Karina is showing a range of silver bowls, displayed in a pair of cabinets designed specially for ‘Inspired’ by Simon Thomas Pirie in English walnut, sycamore and glass.

The pair are then transferring the exhibits back to Dorset where they will be on show alongside further pieces in Simon’s gallery and workshop at Briantspuddle from 27-31 May as part of Purbeck Art Weeks.

“Wood and silver make a really nice combination that bring each other alive,’ says Simon.

“Karina is among the cream of Dorset’s designer-makers and I really respect her work. We’ve known each other for years and it’s lovely to have the opportunity to work together.”

Karina said: “I’m making a special silver bowl for the show inspired by Simon’s work. I admire his pieces for being so contemporary and slick.”

For Purbeck Art Weeks, Karina will be displaying her bowls, plus a range of jewellery with prices starting at £30. Simon will have a full range of furniture on display, including dining sets, cabinets, occasional tables and the desk he made for Makers’ Eye / St Hugh’s College in Oxford. This project recently won the ‘bespoke furniture category’ of the prestigious Wood Awards.

There’s also a chance to hear Karina and Simon talking about their work and practices during Purbeck Art Weeks on Thursday 28 May from 6-9pm at the Courtyard Gallery. Tickets available through Dorset Visual Arts, telephone 01305 853 100. Or see the Dorset Visual Arts website.

It takes place at the London Goldsmiths Hall and is part of Clerkenwell Design Week and the London Festival of Silver. We are delighted to have been invited to take part in this prestigious exhibition curated by Gordon Hamme and the Furniture Makers’ Company, which is now in its 3rd year.

The matching pair of tall display cabinets in English walnut and figured sycamore that we are exhibiting have been specially made for this exhibition. Our ‘Modern Dresser’ in oak and ash will also feature in the show.

Inspired 2015 runs from 19 May to 23 May. Goldsmiths’ Centre, 42 Britton Street, Clerkenwell, London. EC1M 5AD

This year we are pleased to announce that we are exhibiting with the extraordinarily talented silversmith Karina Gill, whom incidently will also be exhibiting at ‘Inspired 2015’. The combination of her beautifully crafted silver bowls and jewellery with our bespoke furniture will make a really striking looking show, and one not to be missed here in Dorset.

We will be open here at the Courtyard Gallery and Workshop from 10am till 5pm, Wednesday 27th to Sunday 31st May.

Purbeck Art Weeks Open Workshop

Monday, May 20th, 2013

We are just getting ready to welcome visitors to our 2013 Open Workshops, as part of the Purbeck Art Weeks Festival (PAW). The workshop and gallery, based in the north of Purbeck near Briantspuddle, will be open from 10am till 5pm every day from Saturday 25 May through till Friday 7 June.

This year Simon will be exhibiting examples of his exquisitely designed tables, chairs, cabinets, desks and occasional pieces. You will be able to wonder around the workshops, see current work in progress and talk to the makers as they work. There will also be the rare opportunity to buy some ex-display pieces for sale at less than half price, it’s a real chance to bag a bespoke bargain! The dining tables pictured below are two such pieces, for more specific information about size materials and cost click here.

Most of Simon’s work is one-off commissions, unique pieces made to individual requirements, so if there is a piece you have always wanted made – whether it’s a small side table or fitted library, a dining set or one of Simon’s incredible kitchens, do come and have an informal chat about your ideas.

There will be a good selection of new work on show including ‘Rosa’, our stunning new dressing table. ‘Floating Bench’ a new garden piece recently taken on by Liberty’s as part of their ‘Outdoor Living Collection’ will also be on display.

Locally produced cheese and breads will be available over the weekends, along with a glass of something cold to compliment the warm welcome. If you hold the fairly commonly held opinion that things in this country are not made the way they used to be, then Simon’s workshop is a good place to go to dispel that idea.

Purbeck Art Weeks – Saturday 25th May – Friday 7th June, Open from 10am – 5pm. (Please note we are not open for the final weekend of the event which runs until Sunday 9th June). For information on performances and all the artists and makers taking part in PAW visit the event website.
